Skills Courses

Sea Kayak Skills Week
Preparation for the Paddle UK Sea Kayak Award

A five-day introduction to sea kayaking designed to build confidence, core skills and good habits on the water.

Based around the Anglesey coastline, this week makes the most of sheltered bays, beautiful tidal waters and varied coastal environments to help newer paddlers build confidence in one of the UK’s best places to learn.

Over five days, you’ll develop the skills, judgement and confidence needed to enjoy safe and rewarding days on the sea. We’ll focus on the foundations of good sea kayaking, helping you make sound decisions, plan simple journeys and build the practical skills needed to paddle safely and independently.

You’ll learn how to understand the key environmental factors that influence where and when to paddle, and begin building confidence in winds up to Force 3, tides up to 1 knot, and both tidal and non-tidal environments.

We’ll also cover the core equipment, rescue skills and paddling techniques needed to stay safe and in control on the water, including forward paddling, manoeuvring in confined spaces, changing direction and moving sideways.

Ideal for those looking to build a strong foundation in sea kayaking, with the option to work towards the Paddle UK Sea Kayak Award.

Sea Kayak Leader Training
Paddle UK Sea Kayak Leader (Tidal)

A practical two-day training course for sea kayakers looking to develop the judgement, decision-making and leadership skills needed to lead others on moderate tidal water.

Open to paddlers with experience in moderate tidal conditions and winds up to Beaufort Force 4, this course is designed to support your development as a confident and capable Sea Kayak Leader.

Over two days, you’ll work alongside like-minded paddlers to refine the personal skills, leadership awareness and decision-making needed to lead safe, enjoyable and well-managed journeys on the sea.

The Sea Kayak Leader award supports paddlers leading others on short, single or multi-day journeys in moderate tidal environments. It's widely used by clubs, outdoor centres and organisations, and is designed for those looking to lead sea kayakers with a range of experience on trips shaped around group needs, conditions and aspirations.

Based around the varied coastline of Anglesey, this course provides an excellent environment to develop and apply the skills needed for Sea Kayak Leader. With sheltered bays, tidal movement, and complex coastal features close at hand, Anglesey offers one of the best training grounds in the UK for building practical leadership experience.

For those looking for a broader development block, this course can also be combined with an additional three-day skills programme and a two-day Incident Management & Rescue course.

There'll also be an opportunity to gain a Personal Performance Award if desired, delivered through Paddle UK and British Canoeing Awarding Body pathways.
