Sea Kayak Arctic Norway from Bodø
Join us on a sea kayaking journey along Norway’s wild Arctic coast, where deep fjords, remote islands and rugged headlands define one of Scandinavia’s most dramatic paddling landscapes. Launching from Bodø, the gateway to Arctic Norway, we journey by sea kayak through a striking coastal wilderness above the Arctic Circle.
What to expect
This intermediate expedition offers a true taste of Arctic sea kayaking - wild, remote and immersive, without the weight and complexity of a longer polar-style undertaking.
Travelling as a team, we explore sheltered fjords, remote islands and weather-shaped coastline, wild camping along the way and adapting our route to make the most of the conditions. We balance steady progress with time to land, explore and experience the landscape properly as the journey unfolds.
Depending on weather, tides and the group, we may also visit Saltstraumen, one of the strongest tidal currents in the world, carefully timed for slack water. It's a rare chance to experience one of Norway’s most remarkable tidal environments from water level.
September is an ideal time to journey through Arctic Norway. The summer crowds have gone, the coastline feels quieter and wilder, and with darkening evenings there is every chance of seeing the Northern Lights overhead.
Conditions at this time of year are often no more changeable than those we regularly experience in the UK, making autumn an excellent time to explore the Arctic by sea kayak.
This is an immersive and rewarding journey through one of the North’s great paddling landscapes - remote enough to feel wild, accessible enough to keep the focus on the journey itself.
Outline Itinerary
Day 1
Arrive in Norway and transfer to our expedition house, where we’ll settle in, meet the group and enjoy an evening meal together before the journey begins.
Days 2–6
Our route is shaped by the conditions, with decisions made as a team to find the most enjoyable and efficient passage through the landscape.
Over five days on the water, we journey by sea kayak through Arctic Norway’s fjords, islands and outer coastline, adapting our plans as needed and taking time to explore, travel and wild camp along the way.
On the evening of Day 6, we return to our expedition house for a final night ashore and a chance to relax before departing the following day.
Day 7
After breakfast, we transfer to the airport for the journey home.
This itinerary is a guide only and will naturally change with the weather and sea conditions.
Who the trip is for
This expedition is for paddlers with some previous sea kayak expedition experience who are keen to explore the wild and varied coastline around Bodø.
It's well suited to those with a little experience of multi-day journeying who are ready to spend several days travelling by kayak, wild camping along the way and exploring one of Arctic Norway’s most striking coastal landscapes.
Our role is to support the journey, not over-direct it. With experienced guides, local knowledge and expedition oversight, we shape the route around the conditions and make decisions as a team throughout. You’ll be involved in the day-to-day rhythm of the expedition - from route choices to camp life - while always supported on the water and throughout the journey.
A Mini Expedition Course in Anglesey, North Wales, is included ahead of the trip, giving us time to paddle together, practise key skills, refine systems and settle into the rhythm of expedition paddling before heading to Norway. It’s a chance to get organised, build confidence as a group and arrive ready to make the most of the journey.
