Based in Anglesey, this course is designed for experienced sea kayak leaders looking to expand their operating environment and develop the skills required for more committing journeys. Through practical leadership scenarios, advanced journey planning and leadership in dynamic coastal environments, you'll develop the confidence and judgement needed to lead effectively when conditions become more challenging.

Throughout the course, we'll focus on advanced leadership, group management and decision-making, helping you refine your ability to assess risk, manage incidents and support others in demanding environments.

What You'll Learn

Topics may include:

Advanced leadership styles and decision-making
Planning and leading journeys in challenging sea conditions
Weather, swell and tidal interpretation
Advanced navigation and route planning
Leadership in surf, swell, tide races and moving water
Dynamic risk assessment and hazard management
Group management in exposed coastal environments
Incident prevention and management
Advanced rescue skills and leadership during incidents
Leading journeys along exposed coastlines and open crossings exceeding 2 nautical miles
Developing confidence and judgement in winds over Force 4 and tidal flows over 2 knots

Who It's For

This course is aimed at experienced sea kayak leaders who are comfortable operating in moderate tidal environments and are looking to further develop their leadership skills in more challenging sea conditions.

It is particularly suitable for leaders seeking to expand their operating environment, undertake more committing journeys or work towards the Paddle UK Advanced Sea Kayak Leader qualification.

Paddle UK Advanced Sea Kayak Leader Award

This course is designed to support paddlers working towards the Paddle UK Advanced Sea Kayak Leader qualification, certificated by the British Canoeing Awarding Body. Training provides an opportunity to further develop leadership, personal paddling, rescue and decision-making skills in challenging sea conditions and dynamic coastal environments.
