Sea Kayak Leader Training
For experienced sea kayakers looking to lead others

Develop the leadership, judgement and decision-making skills needed to lead safe and enjoyable sea kayak journeys in moderate tidal environments.

Based in Anglesey, this course is designed for paddlers who want to take the next step from being a competent sea kayaker to becoming an effective leader. Through a combination of practical leadership scenarios, journey planning and on-water coaching, you'll develop the skills needed to lead groups safely while supporting enjoyable and rewarding experiences on the water.

​

Throughout the course, we'll focus on leadership, group management and decision-making, helping you develop the confidence to lead short, single and multi-day sea kayak journeys in moderate tidal environments.

  • Leadership styles and decision-making

  • Journey planning and route selection

  • Weather, tides and environmental considerations

  • Dynamic risk assessment

  • Supporting paddlers with a range of experience and aspirations

  • Leading journeys in moderate tidal environments, including winds up to Force 4 and tidal flows up to 2 knots

Who It's For

 

This course is aimed at experienced sea kayakers who are comfortable paddling in moderate tidal environments and are looking to develop their leadership skills.

​

It is particularly suitable for paddlers who support club trips, aspire to lead groups independently, or are working towards the Paddle UK Sea Kayak Leader qualification.

 

Paddle UK Sea Kayak Leader Award

 

This course is designed to support paddlers working towards the Paddle UK Sea Kayak Leader qualification, certificated by the British Canoeing Awarding Body. Training provides an opportunity to develop leadership, personal paddling, rescue and decision-making skills while identifying areas for future development.

Continue your development with three additional coaching days focused on personal paddling, rescue skills, leadership scenarios and consolidating the skills required for assessment.

Incident Management, Safety & Rescue (Optional Add-On)

Develop confidence in incident prevention, rescue skills and decision-making under pressure through practical, scenario-based learning in the coastal environment.
