Develop advanced personal paddling skills, judgement and self-reliance for journeys in challenging sea conditions and dynamic coastal environments.

This five-day course is designed for experienced sea kayakers looking to refine their skills and deepen their understanding of the coastal environment. Based in Anglesey, we'll use a variety of venues and conditions to challenge and develop your paddling, decision-making and journeying skills.

Throughout the week, we'll focus on becoming more capable and independent sea kayakers, developing the confidence and judgement needed to operate effectively in demanding conditions and dynamic coastal environments.

What You'll Learn

Topics may include:

Advanced boat control and efficient paddling techniques
Decision-making in challenging sea conditions
Weather, swell and tidal interpretation
Advanced navigation and route planning
Journey planning for exposed coastlines and open crossings
Surf, swell, tide races and moving water
Launching and landing in challenging conditions
Advanced rescue skills and incident prevention
Developing confidence and judgement in winds over Force 4 and tidal flows over 2 knots
Planning and undertaking journeys along exposed coastlines and open crossings exceeding 2 nautical miles
Developing self-reliance and sound judgement on the water

Who It's For

This course is aimed at experienced sea kayakers who are comfortable paddling in a range of coastal environments and are looking to further develop their skills, confidence and independence.

It is particularly suitable for paddlers looking to undertake more committing journeys, explore dynamic coastal environments or work towards the Paddle UK Advanced Sea Kayak Award.

Paddle UK Advanced Sea Kayak Award

For paddlers wishing to gain certification, the course can include assessment for the Paddle UK Advanced Sea Kayak Award, certificated by the British Canoeing Awarding Body.
